Tugan - Navy Series (2021) Round 2

Published: May 29, 2023 Last Updated: May 29, 2023

A short, yet eventful, day for our crews. After heading to the gold coast on Saturday, our U19 Women, U23 Women, Reserve Women and Open Men faced some tough conditions at Tugun Beach on Sunday.

All crews got one race in before the open men had a rollover that resulted in our sweep, David, getting a nasty bump on the head during a rollover. We are happy to report that he is okay, but at the time it was treated as a suspected spinal which meant our shared sweep was out of action for the rest of the carnival. This did not stop the Open Men who fixed some minor damage to the boat with duct tape, and were able to continue competing thanks to Mick Gardner from Noosa who stepped in to sweep them. This was important for the crew who have only recently finalised all rowers and therefore needed some more time in the boat. Although they have identified some areas for improvement, keep an eye on our open men because they are just getting started.

Before the day was cut short for our women, the U19’s, U23’s and reserve women placed fourth, third and first respectively. These were excellent results considering the conditions they were up against. For reference, the surf hazard rating was a 14, which made helmets mandatory for competitors.

Although the weekend didn’t go as planned, the crews enjoyed the day on the beach and some team bonding in the lead-up. All rowers are looking forward to beginning 2022 with a bang at our next carnival so keep an eye on @CoolumBoaties Instagram for updates.
