Ocean Thunder - Round 3
Published: January 12, 2023 Last Updated: January 12, 2023
Last Saturday was round three of Ocean Thunder! We can't believe we only have one round left; we have really enjoyed the racing and event coordination.
Round three was moved to Collaroy as Dee Why beach was closed due to the wind and rough conditions. It meant we didn't get the same surf, but there were still plenty of runners to catch, and an opportunity to show a variety of skills and strength!
We rowed incredibly - coming away with the following results:
Round one - 1st
Round two - 1st
Round three - 1st
Round four - 2nd
Round five - 2nd
Quarter final - 1st
Semi final - 1st
Final - 5th
For the final, it's a double - which means, crews race as usual, then once you reach the beach, one rower jumps out, runs to a flag and back to the boat (Kate), the remining rowers turn the boat around as they are running, and once they've returned, you all jump in and race again, finishing by another one of your rowers (Maggie) running to the flag! It's called a double race, and wow, after 7 races, it was tough.
This was the first time we had raced a double, as it was cancelled for the previous rounds due to the large surf and shore dump.
For the overall points (there are winners of each round, and overall point winners) - we are ranking a close third!
The next, and final event is Saturday 4th February 2023.

Support Coolum Surf Club
Not ready to become part of Coolum Surf Club but still want to help?
It takes a lot of money to run a surf lifesaving club; from the equipment needed on the beach (vehicles, boards, IRBs, first aid kits, defibrillators etc) to administration and training to facilitate patrolling.
So if you can't join us, support us through one of the following options.
Coolum Beach SLSC Nippers
